Handshakes and certificates: what the Nordics and the Gulf have in common

Small, capital-rich and long-term in outlook, the Nordic countries and the Gulf rarely talk to each other directly. Alan Talib's posts and passages from his book explain how trust works in each, and why the two fit together.

Most people think Nordic and Gulf markets have nothing in common.

They're wrong.

Both regions are small, capital-rich, and punching well above their weight globally. Both have sovereign wealth funds that think in decades, not quarters. Both value trust and long-term relationships over transactional deal-making.

The difference? They rarely talk to each other directly.

Over the past two years building NordGulf Alliance, I've seen what happens when you connect the dots between Helsinki and Riyadh, between Stockholm and Abu Dhabi, between Copenhagen and Dubai:

Nordic companies get access to patient capital and fast-growing markets. Gulf investors get exposure to world-class innovation and governance. Both sides skip the London/New York middlemen and build real partnerships.

The opportunity isn't just about money. It's about aligning values, timelines, and ambition.

If you're a Nordic founder looking east, or a Gulf investor looking north, the bridge is shorter than you think.

The bridge is shorter than you think.

From the book: how trust works

The passages below are from Alan's book, From the Sand Dunes to the Fjords and Back (2025), first shared on LinkedIn before it was published.

“Trust isn’t universal—it’s shaped by culture.”

In the Gulf, trust isn’t in the product—it’s in the person. A merchant’s reputation, built over generations, is the ultimate guarantee.

In the Nordics, trust flows through institutions—certificates, contracts, and systems.

Neither system is superior; each reflects its history and environment.

But here’s the magic: bridging these systems creates partnerships that are both efficient and enduring.

"Like water, bonds between people take different forms in different climates. In the Nordic frost, relationships solidify through documented guarantees and institutional frameworks—as reliable as ice. In the Gulf heat, connections flow through family names and personal promises, as vital as an oasis in the desert. Each approach evolved from necessity: the harsh winters of the North demanded systematic assurance, while the shifting sands of the Gulf required unbreakable personal bonds. Today, as these worlds merge, we're discovering something remarkable: when Nordic institutional precision meets Gulf relational depth, new possibilities emerge. As my journey between handshakes and certificates has shown, what appears as conflicting approaches reveals itself as complementary strengths. The future lies not in choosing between systems, but in understanding how to let them flow together, creating something stronger than either could achieve alone."

"The way societies display wealth tells us more than their attitudes toward money—it reveals their underlying values. While Nordic transparency is built on public tax records, open credit ratings, and searchable company valuations that anyone can verify online, Gulf reliability flows through visible displays of capability and responsibility. A Nordic CEO's modest car and a Gulf leader's lavish majlis aren't opposing choices—they're different languages expressing the same promise: 'You can count on me.' In the North, this assurance is documented in institutional systems; in the Gulf, it's demonstrated through the ability to be 'an umbrella in the rainy days.' As my journey between these worlds has shown, what appears as extravagance or excessive modesty reveals itself as something far more profound: different answers to how societies build and maintain their bonds. When we understand this, we begin to see that success isn't just about adapting to surface behaviours it's about understanding the deep logic of connection in each culture."

"In Gulf culture, informal gatherings whether over coffee, a meal, or in a private home are more than social traditions. They are systems for building consensus and understanding priorities. A Qatari businessman once told me, 'Our ancestors navigated deserts by reading the stars. Today, we navigate markets with data. But the principles observation, patience, and planning—are the same.' This blending of ancient wisdom with modern practices is not just respectful; it’s strategic. The most successful partnerships aren’t just about technology or innovation they’re about creating a legacy rooted in shared values and long-term vision."

Ancient wisdom doesn’t fade—it transforms. In gleaming Gulf skyscrapers and Nordic boardrooms, old principles take new forms. The Bedouin’s careful stewardship of water echoes in sustainable energy projects, while Nordic survival strategies shape modern corporate resilience. These aren’t just poetic parallels—they’re practical guides.

As my experiences in both worlds have shown, success often lies not in choosing between tradition and innovation, but in recognising their harmony.
